Risks of teeth whitening

Everybody wants to have a beautiful smile on their face and sparkling white teeth. The popularity of the various teeth whitening methods was raised due to the demand for a beautiful smile. But there are risks associated with the teeth whitening process you should keep in mind.

A temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums are the two most common side effects of teeth whitening. A sensitivity problem usually occurs during the initial stages of the whitening process. Gum irritations often occur during the fitting of the mouthpiece tray. An irritation due to the tooth whitening agents is found very rare. Remember that these side effects are mainly temporary and will usually disappear whitin a few days.

However, there are some remedies to avoid such temporary side effects. Using the tray for a shorter period or by taking a rest from whitening for a few days can help you if you are suffering from sensitivity problems. This way your teeth are able to adjust with the whitening agent you are using. A toothpaste rich in fluoride or containing potassium nitrate can also help but for those you should ask your doctor for advice. Those toothpastes will also protect your enamel and help to re-mineralize your teeth.

You need to be very cautious about the product you are purchasing before starting the process of teeth whitening. Some market products are not up to the mark. There are even some products that do not meet safety measures or norms.

Often the products do not meet the product quality standards fixed by concerned certification authorities. Your dentist or pharmacist can get you products that receive a proper certification from concerned departments and maintain the needed health standards. Even if they cost you more it is the best to opt for these products.

You should only buy whitening agents that are considered to be safe and effective. The whitening agents you apply at home should contain 10% carbamide peroxide. Those used under the supervision of dentists at the clinic should contain 35% hydrogen peroxide.

If you buy over-the-counter whitening toothpaste be sure that they have proper certification from concerned authorities. Even if they are marketed with a guarantee of producing best results any cheap product can be injurious to your health.

There are some other risks associated with teeth whitening like overdose or overuse. Addiction to a product or using unhygienic and improper instruments could also do more harm than good to your health. Always follow the recommendations and directions from your dentist and the manufacturer to avoid any complications that may arise during the teeth whitening process in the long run.
