The modern Fountain Of Youth is called Plastic Surgery

Eyelid surgery and brow lifts are commonly performed alongside a facelift and facial rejuvenation procedures. Often they are the only remaining viable options to restore a youthful apperance to the lower face and neck. Loose skin and muscles can be tighten with a facelift and excess fat can be removed or repositioned to eliminate sagging. But the surgical rearrangement of the deep tissues and skin excision do not alone achieve the reversal of facial aging. The key to achieve optimal results in facial rejuvenation is considered to consist of removing, repositioning and adding soft tissue rather than just tightening the skin and muscles.

To perform facelift surgery a local anestehsia with sedation or general anesthesia can be used. During surgery your hair will be helb back with rubber bands. But it is not necessary to shave your hair! Traditional facelift incisions generally start above the hairline at the temples. They continue along a linge in front of the ear or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear, behind the earlobe and back into the scalp. A second small incision under the chin is often used to adress the neck. The skin will then be separated from the underlying fat and muscles. The underlying muscle fascia is tightened along with the platysma muscle in the neck. Excess fat will be removed. The excess skin will be pulled up and back and then trimmed after the deep tissues are tightened. Both stitches and staples can be used alone or in combination to close the incisions. A dressing will be applied to protect the entire area. After the surgery or a stay in hostpital for the first night most people can already return home.

Men or women whose face and neck have begun to sag but hasn’t lost its elasticity and whose bone structure is well-defined and strong are the best candidates for a facelift. The age of most patients is between their forties and sixties but even people in their seventies or eighties can have a successful facelift done.

A facelift can not only make you look younger and fresher, it may also enhance your self-confidence in the process. But it will not give you a totally different look and it can not restore the health and vitality of your youth. Think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon before you decide to have a surgery done.

Every surgery carries some risk and uncertainty!

Complications are quite infrequent and usually minor if the facelift is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. However, individuals vary greatly in their physical reactions, healing abilities and their anatomy and the outcom of a surgery is never completely predictable.

Possible complications that can occur include hematoma, infection, injury to the nerves that control facial muscles and reactions to the anesthesia. Smokers are most likely affected by poor healing of the skin.

Following your surgeon’s advice not only after but also before your surgery can reduce your risks.

Surgery facelifts are very individualized procedures. The plastic surgeon will evaluate your face including the skin and underlying bone in your initial consultation. He will also discuss your goals for the surgery.

A good surgeon will check for medical conditions that could cause problems during or after surgery. These conditions include uncontrolled high blood pressure, the tendency to form excessive scars or blood clotting problems. Be sure to tell your surgeon if you are a smoker or taking any drugs or medications, especially aspirin or other drugs that affect clotting.

If you decide to have a facelift your surgeon will explain the techniques and anesthesia he or she will use. He will also explain the type of facility where the surgery will be performed and also the risks and costs involved. Do not hesitate to ask any question you have, especially those regarding your concerns and expectations about the results.
